What We Learn in Bareboat Skipper Sail Courses

We have identified the main topics that we study in theory and practice during training.
  • Parts of the yacht / Check in

We study the structure of a yacht both in theory and in practice. Together we explore our yacht, learn and memorize all the key terms, and practice how to accept a yacht from a charter company using a checklist, check the engine, and prepare the yacht for departure to sea.
  • VHF operator

An important part of any maritime training is radio communication. We learn how to use a VHF radio, call a marina, and the nautical alphabet. Upon completion of the course and passing exams, students receive a VHF operator license.
  • Yacht safety

Every future captain must know and follow safety procedures on board a yacht, conduct a safety briefing for their crew, and understand how to respond in emergency situations at sea
  • Meteorology

Basic metrology, the causes of wind, cloud types, sources of meteorological information, and the ability to use modern weather forecasting applications are all essential skills for a future Captain.
  • COLREGS Rules

We teach in theory, analyze and apply in practice the set of International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
  • Coastal navigation

We learn how to read a sailing chart and plan passages, use paper and electronic charts, plot a route, distinguish between sea lights, signs, and sound signals, determine a vessel's position by bearing, use a chart plotter on a yacht, and use the GARMIN app.
  • Yacht handling

    .
We learn how to handle a yacht under engine and sails, anchor the yacht, pick up a mooring buoy, moor stern-to the dock, moor alongside, perform a man overboard recovery, and heave to.
  • Sail handling

Yacht handling under sail, yacht heading relative to the wind, sail setting procedures, and using the gennaker. Man overboard rescue under sail.
